About Bookplates

Bookplates are usually considered just a sign of ownership, but many are works of art in their own right. The Historical Library owns a significant collection of American, English, and Continental bookplates, assembled through donations over a number of years. Many of these bookplates are from the libraries of medical men, like Harvey Cushing. Some of the bookplates are armorial, representing the crest of a certain family. Others were commissioned with different motifs and themes, such as battling Death, or reading a book.

The Historical Library would like to thank our research associate William Helfand for helping to identify the bookplates and catalog the collection.
